Police find 8-year-old missing from Birney Elementary

UPDATE as of 8:20 p.m. Police said the missing girl was found safe at a friend's house, in a tent in the backyard. Another friend officers spoke with told them she was there, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

INITIAL POST: Police are looking for a missing 8-year-old girl last seen at Birney Elementary School when class let out Tuesday.

Anastasa Scholtka is described as 4 foot, with a slim build, blonde hair, and brown eyes. She was wearing a red fuzzy dress and black sandals, and carrying a backpack that is blue, black and white.

Police said her sister told investigators Anastasa said she was going to run away, because she thought she was going to be in trouble with her foster mother.

She's believed to have left the school when class ended at 3:30 p.m., at 1202 S. 76th St., police said.

Officers have searched the area and all known locations they think she could be.

"At this point we hope she is with someone safe who will call or someone sees her and calls," police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

Anastasa may try to find her other siblings, who are in foster care in University Place, police said.

She is not familiar with the Tacoma area.

Officers are not able to activate an Amber Alert to help find Anastasa, because that system is reserved for children believed to have been abducted, Cool said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
