U.S. Open offers a career stepping stone for Tacoma intern

— Allie Bordeaux found her her dream job at the U.S. Open.

Bordeaux, of Tacoma, is one of 20 interns working in the 39,000-square-foot merchandise pavilion at Pinehurst No. 2.

"I love golf and I like talking to people," said Bordeaux, 21. "It's kind of the best of both worlds for me."

At the customer service counter Wednesday, Bordeaux offered directions and processed merchandise returns.

When Sam Ramsey, of Asheboro, N.C., asked how to get to a TV network tent, Bordeaux pointed the way.

When shoppers walked by, Bordeaux called out, "You all have a good day. Enjoy the golf."

She's working 13-hour days every day during the U.S. Open and the U.S. Women's Open.

Tiring? Not really.

"I'm a college student," she said. "I run on caffeine."

Her shift is divided into time at the customer service counter, the uniform exchange for volunteers, and helping manage the satellite merchandise tent.

"This is the best internship I could have asked for," she said.

Besides paying her, the United States Golf Association provides housing and meals.

Her nearly two-month internship with the USGA ends July 4.

Bordeaux will go back home to Tacoma for a month and then return to Washington State University to finish her bachelor's degree in public relations and sport management in December.

Her goal: to work for the USGA.

Golf is a way of life for her. A Tacoma native, she played on Bellarmine Preparatory School’s state championship girls golf team in 2010 and and 2011.

Bordeaux said she loves coming to work every day and making people happy.

She hopes she'll be able to work for the USGA at next year's U.S. Open at Chambers Bay golf course in University Place.

And she hopes her internship will help lead to a career.

"I want to be in the world of golf somehow," Bordeaux said.
