Whittier Elementary locked down after burglary nearby

Staff writerJune 11, 2014

UPDATE as of 9 p.m. Pierce County Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said the incident near the school was a burglary, not a robbery. Deputies used a police dog to track the suspect, who was taken into custody. The person is suspected of burglarizing a home on Emerson Street, Troyer said.

INITIAL POST: Whittier Elementary School briefly went on lockdown Wednesday, after a robbery happened in the Fircrest area, principal Donna Basil said in a message to parents.

The lockdown was from 12:50 to 1:17 p.m.  at the school, which is at 777 Elm Tree Ln. in Fircrest.

"Everyone at Whittier worked efficiently to protect the safety of your students," Basil told parents.

Further details were not immediately available.
