Gig Harbor man charged with slamming baby's hand in door

Staff writerJune 13, 2014

A Gig Harbor man was charged Friday with slamming an 11-month-old boy’s hand in a door and breaking it.

Tyler Clifton, 45, faces one count of third-degree child assault and one count of interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

Police were called to a home in the 11540 block of Portage Place Thursday and found Clifton’s wife and crying son. The baby’s hand was swollen and deformed.

Clifton’s wife told police they argued and he chased her through their home calling her derogatory names. He allegedly snatched her cell phone away when she tried to call 911.

As she picked up her son and tried to run through the front door, Clifton allegedly slammed the door and caught the baby’s hand. The force of the door shutting cracked the door frame, according to charging papers.
