Question: When is the striping for a third lane supposed to happen on eastbound state Route 16 between Union and Sprague avenues? A few months back, the Transportation Department told The News Tribune it would happen by June. Will we see this change soon? Kate, Tacoma
Answer: It’s still possible the realignment could happen this month, but July is looking more likely, according to the state Department of Transportation.
“When we made the decision to restripe that section of highway, we weren’t sure how quickly we’d be able to get it done,” Transportation Department spokeswoman Claudia Bingham Baker said Friday.
“There are several considerations for the timing of the work,” she said, “including weather, available resources and how restriping that small section of highway affects the rest of the eastbound Nalley Valley construction zone.”
The Nalley Valley project is quickly coming to conclusion, and quite a bit of restriping needs to occur on state Route 16 and Interstate 5 to put lanes, ramps and I-5 collector/distributor lanes into their final configuration.
“It’s still possible we will get that small segment restriped in June,” Bingham Baker said. “However, looking at construction schedules, it’s more likely to occur in July.”
