GO Arts: Singer-storyteller Eric Taylor plays new arts venue in Mineral, Washington

Tacoma News TribuneJune 16, 2014

Singer Eric Taylor will perform at the Mineral School arts center this weekend.

There’s a new arts center underway in Mineral, and it’s rising from the ashes of a previous one. The Mineral School is a new arts venue housed in the 1947 Mineral School property in Mineral, the small lake town between Morton and Elbe in the shadow of Mt. Rainier. Until 2010 the building was the Mineral Lake Events Center, which hosted concerts and arts events. The new center promises some of the same, plus plans to become an overnight artists’ residency – and they’re kicking off the fundraising with a concert this weekend featuring Texas singer-storyteller Eric Taylor with Seattle duo The Drop Shadows.

Called “one of the great Texas folk poets” (Texas Music Magazine), with tales “exquisitely told” (Atlanta Music Guide) and “great narrative quality” (Lyle Lovett), Eric Taylor has woven song and story for four decades, influencing artists such as Nanci Griffith and Steve Earle. He’s appeared on NPR’s “Morning Edition,” Late Night Live with David Letterman and the BBC Radio.

Taylor will kick off events this and next year to help support the arts center, under new ownership since August 2013 and now a non-profit, while they adapt the event space to allow for longer-term artist residencies.

There’s camping in the back field the night of the show.

7 p.m. June 21. $25 (includes BBQ dinner). The Mineral School, 114 Mineral Road S., Mineral. mineral-school.org, brownpapertickets.com
