Voss, Scott, Derby earn Tacoma Athletic Commission awards

With their high school graduations in the review mirror, Puyallup’s Matt Voss, Steilacoom’s Ben Scott and Bellarmine Prep’s Hannah Derby look ahead to Division I competition this fall, but not before being recognized for their senior-year accomplishments one last time.

The trio were honored Monday night as Tacoma-Pierce County’s high school student-athletes of the year at the annual Tacoma Athletic Commission/Columbia Bank “Salute to Sports” night at Bellarmine Prep.

Voss (wrestling), Scott (swimming) and Derby (track and field) combined to win five state titles during the 2013-14 school year.

Voss, also a football standout who will wrestle at George Mason University, capped a senior season with a second consecutive Class 4A Mat Classic title at 220 pounds, and compiled an 80-0 record his junior and senior seasons.

Scott, who will swim for Pacific-12 Conference member Utah, won five state titles — 100 backstroke (two), 100 free, 100 butterfly, and a member of the Sentinels’ state title-winning 200-medley relay — the last two years, and qualified for state in every event except diving and breaststroke, said coach Kathy Casey.

Derby, who will run at the University of Washington, became the first female in 4A or 3A to win four consecutive 400-meter state titles, and also helped the Lions to the 4A team title in cross country last fall.

It was the second consecutive year a Bellarmine Prep athlete won the female high school student-athlete of the year award. Last year, Courtney Schwan, winner of Monday’s Dick Hannula women’s amateur athlete of the year award, was the 2013 winner as a junior. Foss graduate and former Oregon State defensive end Scott Crichton won the men’s amateur award.

Bob Robertson, best known as former longtime play-by-play voice of Washington State football and basketball, received the Doug McArthur Lifetime Achievement Award.
