Local mountaineers speaking at Sustainable Summits conference

Tacoma News TribuneJune 18, 2014

Several notable Washington mountaineers are scheduled to speak at the Sustainable Summits conference July 20-23 in Golden, Colo.

The conference on environmental practice is presented by the American Alpine Club and Alaska’s Denali National Park, where RMI has guided for decades. A statement released by the National Park Service says “the conference is designed to foster global partnerships and better inform land managers, nongovernmental organizations, climbers, and outdoor industry partners on issues related to environmental sustainability, the effects of climate change, access, and management of mountainous regions.”

Local mountaineers scheduled to speak include: Peter Whittaker, co-owner of Ashford-based Rainier Mountaineering Inc.; Dan Nordstrom, owner of Seattle-based Outdoor Research; and RMI guides Alex Van Steen and Melissa Arnot.

Areas from around the world will be represented and there will be a panel discussion on the current challenges in the Himalaya, particularly Mount Everest. Former Mount Rainier lead climbing ranger Mike Gauthier will moderate this conversation.
