Burger lust: Chalk Talk Bistro in downtown Tacoma

A Special Sauce Burger from Chalk Talk Bistro, $6.99, with fresh-cut fries.

My most recent burger journey took me to the newly made over Mary’s Burger Bistro in downtown Tacoma. Now called Chalk Talk, the burger joint got a dining room facelift with chalkboard walls for doodling and switched from griddled to flame-broiled burgers.

Check it out:

Burger find: Secret Sauce Burger, $6.99

Where: Chalk Talk Bistro, 2301 Pacific Ave., Tacoma; 253-779-0777

Why you should eat it: For not much more than fast food prices, get a flame-broiled burger with American cheese and a side of fresh-cut fries.

Good stuff: A beefy 1/3 pound burger patty was flame grilled, with lot of juice left in it. No overcooking here. Thick-cut onions and a broadly sliced dill pickle slice added serious crunch.

Missed the mark: Secret sauce wanted a bit more tang, but it was tasty. The bun is served on a kaiser bun that’s a bit squishy and underbaked. That might bother some. Toasted bun earned bonus points, though.

Fries: Nailed it. They’re a little more broadly cut than the fries at Pick-Quick, but like Pick-Quick, they’re crispy edged fresh-cut fries. I like my fries with a bit more surface area, so I was a fan.

The verdict: Good value.
