Man charged in Eatonville rollover crash that seriously injured woman

Pierce County prosecutors have charged a man in connection with a rollover crash near Eatonville that seriously injured a woman.

The accident happened March 2 in the 45800 block of state Route 7, about three miles southeast of Eatonville.

Witnesses said James Chapman, 39, was speeding and driving erratically when he passed a car, lost control of his car in the rain and it rolled into a field.

Sheriff’s deputies found Chapman’s car lying on the passenger side door and against a tree stump. The car hit several tree stumps and rocks before coming to rest on its side, deputies said.

Chapman suffered cuts to his face, head, back and neck, as well as having some teeth knocked out. A woman in the passenger seat suffered a head injury and fractured bones, according to court records.

Chapman was under the influence of alcohol and marijuana at the time of the crash, charging papers state.

He was charged with vehicular assault and third-degree driving on a suspended license. He has not yet been arraigned.
