Police: Woman says she accidentally stabbed husband while cooking dinner

Staff writerJuly 3, 2014

A Federal Way woman told police she accidentally stabbed her husband to death as she was cooking dinner, according to court records.

Bonita J. O’Neal, 50 called 911 about 8 p.m. Wednesday to say she had accidentally stabbed her husband in the chest at their home in the 3800 block of Southwest 339th Street, police wrote in court records.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office did not release the husband’s name Thursday.

As they were discussing their mortgage, O’Neal suspected her husband, 51, had been drinking, according to the records.

She told police she picked up a knife from a kitchen drawer to cut up frozen chicken for dinner and her husband walked up behind her. She turned around, she said, and accidentally stabbed him.

O’Neal’s son told police he woke up to his stepfather slamming the door and arguing with his mother. He came out of his room to see his mother holding a kitchen knife and telling her husband to leave, the son said.

He was trying to separate the pair “when (the stepdad) ‘went around him,’” according to the court records.

The papers do not specify what happened next, except to say the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

King County Superior Court found probable cause Thursday to hold O’Neal in jail without bail on suspicion of second-degree murder, until her bond hearing Saturday.
