TRACKING LOCAL GOLFERS ON THE PGA TOUR

This week: The Greenbrier Classic, Thursday through Sunday, The Old White TPC, White Sulphur, West Virginia.

In the field: University Place’s Michael Putnam, Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley and Tacoma’s Troy Kelly.

First-round scores: Putnam shot a 3-under-par 67, Kelly shot a 1-under 69 and Stanley a 1-over 71.

Position: Putnam is tied for 18th, Kelly is tied for 53rd and Stanley is tied for 92nd – all trailing leader Jonas Blixt (64).

Recap: On a soft layout — an overnight thunderstorm drenched the course late Wednesday night — guys expect to make birdies. Putnam certainly did, even though early in his round, he was playing a lot of “mud” balls off the fairway. He birdied the fourth and fifth holes — capped by a wedge approach at No. 5 that stopped close (4-foot putt) to quickly get to 2 under. And after trading a birdie with a bogey early on his final nine, he birdied the last hole, a par 3, by rolling in a 25-footer. It was Putnam’s sixth opening-round score of par or better in his past seven PGA Tour starts. … Hello, Troy Kelly — welcome back! After a year layoff, the big hitter from Central Kitsap High School didn’t do a whole lot of good or bad. He nearly aced the eighth hole, a long par 3 over water, but birdied to get to 2 under on the front nine. And his only bogey came at No. 10 (three-putt from 75 feet). … Stanley holed out from the fairway at No. 2 (9-iron approach from 155 yards) for an eagle-2 to start his round. But he surrendered his 2-under standing with four bogeys in the first eight holes of his back nine.

Tee times Friday: Stanley at 5:10 a.m. (PDT), Putnam at 9:10 a.m., and Kelly at 10:40 a.m. All go off the 10th tee.
