Bail set at $500,000 for woman accused of stabbing husband

A Federal Way woman’s bail was set Saturday at $500,000, said King County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Dan Donohoe.

Bonita J. O’Neal, 50, was arrested Wednesday after she told police she accidentally stabbed her husband in the chest at home. She has not been formally charged, though she’s been jailed since then on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The King County Medical Examiner’s office identified the dead man Saturday as Eric C. Winters, 52. His death has been ruled a homicide.

According to court documents, O’Neal suspected her husband had been drinking, picked up a knife to cut up frozen chicken for dinner, then stabbed him accidentally when Winters walked up behind her.

The same document says O’Neal’s son told police he woke up to his stepfather slamming the door and arguing with his mother. He came out of his room to see his mother holding a kitchen knife and telling her husband to leave. He was trying to separate the pair “when (the stepdad) ‘went around him.’”
