Saratoga changes policy for popular giveaways

The Associated PressJuly 16, 2014

— The New York Racing Association is changing the policy for its popular giveaways at Saratoga Race Course, where "spinners" inflated track attendance several times a season while collecting hats, mugs and other free souvenirs.

NYRA (NYE'-ruh) says track visitors will be permitted to purchase two additional vouchers at a time to redeem for the giveaway. Previously, trackgoers were allowed to buy up to five vouchers at a time. Each visitor automatically receives a voucher with their paid admission.

Racing officials say they'll no longer count extra voucher purchases as part of the track's daily attendance total on giveaway days. For years, giveaway day attendance figures were inflated by the thousands by those who "spun" the turnstiles multiple times to get the freebies but didn't stay for the races.

Saratoga's season opens Friday. The first of four giveaway days is Sunday.
