Tracking Ryan Moore at the British Open: First round

This week: The British Open, Thursday through Sunday, Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, England.

First-round score: 2-under-par 70.

Position: Moore is tied for 19th, four strokes behind leader Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland (66).

Recap: With the wind down and ideal conditions for scoring, the Cascade Christian product did something he had not done since the 2006 PGA Championship — register a bogey-free round at a major championship. All of the fireworks for Moore came early. He birdied the third hole, then rolled in a 20-foot putt from the right side of the sixth green for his other birdie. Moore hit 12 of 14 fairways and reached 14 of 18 greens in regulation during a relatively stress-free round.
