A 14-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly brought a loaded handgun to Spanaway Junior High School, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported Wednesday.
The boy did not point the weapon at anyone and no one was hurt, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
Deputies were called to the school at 15701 B St. E. about 8:30 a.m. after several students anonymously reported the boy had a gun on school grounds.
Deputies confiscated the gun and took the teen into custody, Troyer said. He told deputies he was a gang member but offered no other explanation about why he had a gun and what he had intended to do with it.
Deputies booked the boy into Remann Hall juvenile jail on suspicion of having a gun on school grounds and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Troyer praised the anonymous tipsters that led to the boy’s arrest.
“We’re glad they don’t want this in their school,” Troyer said of the students. “They are our best eyes and ears in the schools.”
Parents were notified of the incident by two phone messages and a note from the school.
