A hoax text message making its way around the country warning of a gang initiation at Wal-Mart has reached some residents in Western Washington, including Tacoma and Pierce County.
“That’s all an Internet rumor,” Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ed Troyer said Thursday. “It’s been done before and we’re aware of it.”
Several Washington residents received the following text message: “Hey, do not go to Wal-Mart today or tomorrow. There is supposed to be some kind of gang initiation to kill 3 women and 3 men. Plz take heed to this and be careful.”
The text doesn’t give a specific Wal-Mart location. A quick search of the Internet shows similar reports from police around the country.
A Tacoma police spokesman said the department was aware of the message, but noted that there isn’t a Wal-Mart in Tacoma. Snopes.com, which debunks or confirms urban legends, updated its site today and said the message, which first appeared n 2005, is a hoax.
