Five years ago, while reading an article on the power of writing out goals, 35-year-old South Hill resident Chad Sauders grabbed a slip of paper and jotted down a lifelong dream: “I will climb Mount Rainier.”

Editor’s note: The News Tribune is chronicling the adventures of a group of local novice climbers as they try to bag the volcanoes of the Northwest. Last year, the group climbed Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams. This summer, the group is training for an August attempt of Mount Rainier. Chad Sauders loves hunting so much, he has a gun rack on his mountain bike.

Mount Adams was the second climb for the High Pointe Community Church Outdoor Club of South Hill. The novice climbers, who summited Mount St. Helens on June 11, plan to work their way up to Mount Rainier, checking off other Cascade peaks such as Mount Baker and Glacier Peak along the way.

The thought hits me at 8,365 feet, as I lie on my stomach with a disposable camera in my right hand and my elbows hanging just over the rim of Mount St. Helens' colossal crater.
