This is a good time of the year to look at what the birds in your yard are eating but not at the feeders. Which shrubs, trees or flowers are still producing fruit, seeds or blossoms? As the lushness of summer fades, those plants with life in them stand out. Some stand out because that’s where the birds are.

Over the years, friends of ours who are canoe enthusiasts have encouraged us to take up the sport. They exclaim over and over how great the birding is when you are in a canoe. We did try it once.

Late summer into fall is the time we can enjoy the migrational movement of the Heermann’s gulls. After nesting in the Gulf of California, they travel the coastline north as far as British Columbia. From the coast to our inland waters, they move into the Northwest by the thousands.

This year’s nesting season seems to go on and on. The cold spring we (and the birds) experienced seems the logical reason for this. Failed nesting attempts due to cold, wet weather caused some birds to try a second nesting and others like the swallows waited awhile.

When a nonbirding trip takes us to a place where we could see some interesting birds, we try to allow the needed time. Local parks come to mind first. San Francisco is a large and busy city, but Golden Gate Park is one of the best city parks in North America.
