Thanks in part to difficult fishing conditions lately, the sport fishery for spring chinook salmon on the lower Columbia River has been extended through next Friday.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife approved morning razor clam digs at five coastal beaches for Easter weekend.
As of Sunday, anglers will need a new 2012-13 fishing license. Mike Chamberlain of Ted’s Sports Center is urging people to get their license well before their next trip. He said the state Department of Fish and Wildlife is updating its user profiles, and if you try to get your new license after the department is closed for the day, you will have to wait.
Reports are far from glowing, but there are some positives out there. People are catching more spring chinook in the Cowlitz River and in the Forks-area rivers, but action on the Columbia remains slow.
The fishing seems to be improving in many waters, especially steelheading on the Cowlitz and trout action on local lakes. Salmon fishing in Puget Sound remains slow.
The steelhead fishing remains good on the Olympic Peninsula, while the action on the Cowlitz River is heating up. Salmon anglers will want to head for the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Meanwhile, a number of year-round lakes have been planted with trout in the past week or so.
A week of cold, wet weather hasn’t done much to get anglers out on the water.
It’s March and it’s cold, so many favorite fishing holes around Western Washington are either closed or not producing many fish.
Chester Allen, former outdoors writer for The Olympian, has authored his first book, “Fly Fishing for Sea-Run Cutthroat.”
The first morning razor clam digs of the season are scheduled for this weekend at four coastal beaches, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife announced this week.
Fishing is still slow most places around South Sound thanks to cold weather.
Just when it seemed like the fishing was picking up, the weather turned against anglers.
Based on preliminary numbers, South Sound anglers can expect the 2012-13 fishing season to be similar to last season.
With chilly temperatures around South Sound, the action continues to be slow for anglers on Puget Sound and local lakes.
Trout action on local lakes open year-round seems to be improving, but colder temperatures this weekend could slow that action. River fishing also could be impacted by the weather, if the rain brings levels up too high.
