An estimated 5.1 million pink salmon will soon return to the Puget Sound area. Here’s what you need to know if you plan to catch some. Western Washington anglers are on the verge of a salmon-soaked summer.
I hike and camp a lot in the middle of the hottest days of the year and there are a lot of times that it is for long periods of time with no access to showers. I was wondering what you have heard about Icebreaker underwear and how well they are about odor. – Katherine, Greenville, S.C.
The U.S. Forest Service specialists at Mount St. Helens are joining forces with seven community organizations for a summer of volunteer trail repair work.
Mount Rainier National Park will receive more than $72,600 from Washington’s National Park Fund. The money will be used for restoration of the Paradise meadows, for volunteer outreach and for the programs Camping Adventure with My Parents and Connecting Kids to Parks. The money is part of $200,000 the fund is giving to the state’s three national parks.

Fishing hasn’t been spectacular anywhere in Western Washington this week. Poor ocean conditions kept Westport and Ilwaco charters in port the past few days, and low, clear river conditions continue to dampen angler aspirations.
This is the time of year when our local turtles become fairly easy to spot. Visit a slow-moving or still-water wetland, look for a log or rocks sticking out of the water in the sunshine, and you might find one or more turtles basking themselves.
I find that whenever I sleep outside with friends, I wake up with the most condensation on my bag. I have a 4-year-old 15-degree Marmot down bag.
