Founder of Olympic Coast Clean-up dies at age 73
CommentsJan Klippert, founder of the Olympic Coast Clean-up, died Jan. 22 of cancer on his 73rd birthday.
Klippert began the cleanup in 2000, after he hiked the Olympic coastline and was surprised at the amount of debris and garbage littering the beaches. Since then, 3,856 volunteers have removed an estimated 187 tons of debris, an average of 97 pounds per volunteer.
The week before his death, the Seattle resident expressed a sense of relief about the creation of the Washington Clean Coast Alliance. The alliance will lead the organization of the annual April cleanup. You can learn more about how to get involved in this year’s cleanup, scheduled for April 26, at www.CoastSavers.org.
