All ages can learn about fishing, canoeing, climbing

The Metro Parks Outdoor Adventure program offers programs for all experience levels in activities from kayaking to rock climbing this month.

Equipment, transportation and instruction are provided for each program so participants can sit back, relax and enjoy the fun.

For information on programs and classes, call 253-305-1022 or download a copy of the winter 2008 Activity Guide at www.metroparkstacoma.org. Copies are also available at the Metro Parks headquarters building, 4702 S. 19th St., Tacoma, and at community centers throughout the city.

Here is a sample of upcoming programs.

BIKING

Women’s Outdoor Club – Bike Maintenance 101: April 30. This women-only clinic is a chance to get hands-on bike maintenance basics from one of REI’s master technicians. Free for Tacoma residents and $4 for nonresidents.

FISHING

Family Fly-Fishing Trip: April 12. Take an exclusive fly-fishing trip with the whole family to a private lake and fish for trophy rainbow trout. Ages 5 and older are welcome. Cost is $35 for Tacoma residents, $40 nonresidents.

KAYAKING/CANOEING

Nisqually Delta Full Moon Kayak Tour: April 19. This tour will take kayakers of all ability levels through the largest saltwater estuary in the South Sound, home to a plethora of birds, animals and plants, under the light of a full moon. It is common to spot seals, sea lions, otters, herons, otters and eagles. Cost is $60 for Tacoma residents, $65 nonresidents.

Family Canoeing – Discovery Paddle: April 26. Embark on a guided canoe tour of one of Pierce County’s wetland environments. With the help of a Tacoma Nature Center naturalist, identify plants and animals native to the Northwest. Cost is $13 for Tacoma residents and $15 for nonresidents.

ROCK CLIMBING

Family Outdoor Rock Climbing: April 13. After learning basic rock climbing skills at the Centre at Norpoint, practice on a real rock. This class is designed for families who have taken the Indoor Family Climbing course at the center or whose parents who have passed the belay test. Participants will take what they have learned indoors and try it out on a real rock in the outdoors. The cost, for one parent and child, is $30 for CentreCard families, $60 for Tacoma residents and $66 for nonresidents. Additional parent or children fee is $15-$30.

Youth Indoor Rock Climbing: April 19. Ages 7 to 10 will learn how to put on a harness, tie knots, handle rope and properly communicate with climbing partners, and they will practice these new skills on the wall at the Centre at Norpoint. Cost is $10 for CentreCard holders, $20 for Tacoma residents, $22 nonresidents.

Youth Indoor Rock Climbing: April 26. Ages 4 to 6 will learn the same basic skills. Cost is $10 for CentreCard holders, $20 for Tacoma residents and $22 for nonresidents.
