State seeks public input on winter recreation

The state Parks and Recreation Commission will hold a series of public meetings to gather comments on a winter recreation strategic plan. The meetings are part of a planning process that began in early 2007.

Purpose: To gather public comment on winter recreation activities managed by the State Parks Department.

The program: The Winter Recreation Program manages more than 3,500 miles of groomed snowmobile trails, 700 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails and more than 100 Sno-Parks. The program is supported entirely by user fees, snowmobile registrations and a percentage of the Washington state fuel tax.

The plan: When complete, the plan will define the department’s winter recreation program goals and strategies for the next five years. The strategic plan was developed by a variety of winter recreation user groups, the Winter Recreation and Snowmobile Advisory committees, various winter recreation organizations, other government agencies, state parks staff and public comment.

Online: A draft of the proposed strategic plan is available online at www.parks.wa.gov/winter/strategy.asp.

Commission action: The proposed plan will be considered at the commission’s meeting June 12 in Okanogan.
