CommentsWHAT: Jarrell Cove State Park is a 43-acre marine camping area with 3,500 feet of shoreline on the northwest end of Harstine Island in South Puget Sound. Most visitors arrive by boat, but the area can be accessed by car.
WHEN: Open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the summer and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter.
WHERE: Harstine Island
HISTORY: The park is named for Philura Jarrell, the first pioneer woman to settle on the island.
ACTIVITIES: The park offers hiking and biking, as well as easy access for swimming, diving, water skiing, fishing and clamming. The park has places to play badminton, horseshoes and volleyball.
GETTING THERE: From Interstate 5 in Olympia, take U.S. 101 west to Highway 3. Take Highway 3 north for eight miles, then turn right on Pickering Road and go four miles to Harstine Island. Turn left at the first stop sign on the island, and drive four miles to the park.
COST: No fee. Moorage is $10 per day.
