The 22nd edition of the Washington Sportsmen’s Show will feature the “Steelhead River,” an Army marksmanship trainer and the Gore Extreme Weather Chamber. Attendees will also hear from several members of the U.S. Olympic shooting team.
This year’s show opens Wednesday and runs through Jan. 25 at the Puyallup Fair & Events Center.
Indoor river: The Les Schwab-sponsored “Steelhead River” includes drifts, tail-outs and rapids. It allows guides and pro staff representatives from fishing equipment manufacturers to demonstrate techniques and gear in more natural conditions.
Speakers include Mike Perusse on “Center Pin Fishing for Steelhead,” Jim Stahl on “Float Fishing for Steelhead,” Dean Finnerty on “Advanced Flyfish Techniques for Steelhead,” and Kelly Laatsch on “Streamer Techniques.”
Improve your aim: A new feature to the show is a 40-foot-long Army Marksmanship Trainer, giving a behind-the-scenes look at U.S. Army training simulators. Promoting the safe and responsible use of firearms, the mobile unit features a rifle and pistol simulator and Lasershot Interactive System, according to a news release.
On Jan. 24-25, two 2008 Olympic participants and members of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit will be on hand for demonstrations and to meet showgoers, the release said. On hand will be 2008 gold medalist Sgt. Walton Glenn Eller III and 2008 Olympic double trap team member Jeffrey G. Holguin. Both are based at Fort Benning, Ga.
Test rain gear: The Extreme Weather Chamber will allow show visitors to step inside and test Gore-Tex apparel. The chamber allows people to choose from a wide range of conditions, including rainfall up to 22 inches per hour, whipping winds up to speeds of 32 mph, bolts of thunder and strobes of lightening to simulate the look and feel of a storm, said show organizers.
Head & Horns: Always one of the most popular exhibits, this year’s show also will feature a new exhibit titled “The Legendary Blacktail of the Pacific Northwest.” Five world-record Columbia blacktail deer will be on display for the first time as part of a 2009 Northwest tour, organizers said. The deer were taken in Oregon and Washington.
Speakers: There will be more than 150 seminars and demonstrations during the five-day show. Among the presenters are survival expert Peter Kummerfeldt, Eric Linde on salmon fishing the Lower Columbia River, Terry Rudnick on vertical jigging techniques, Glenn Berry on elk calling, and Chris Plumb on duck hunting in Western Washington.
Camp cooks CeeDub, Hobart Mann and Herb Good will return to the Fred Meyer Cook Tent, and National Bird Dog Hall of Fame inductee and dog trainer Dan Mar will be on hand.
Hours: Noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Jan. 22, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 24, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 25.
