The South Sound offers a remarkable mix of places to go kayaking. Beginners can cruise the calm waters of the Nisqually River delta, while advanced paddlers can tackle the strong currents of the Tacoma Narrows.
If you are interested in learning the skills needed to paddle local waters, Metro Parks Tacoma is offering a basic kayak class on July 9. The class will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at Titlow Park at the west end of Sixth Avenue in Tacoma.
Participants will learn basic strokes and the techniques needed to keep control of the kayak and enjoy a day on the water. The focus will be on paddling skills including forward stroke, steering, controlling and rescue. This three-hour class is perfect for the beginner or for those who want to refresh their skills, according to a Metro Parks news release.
The cost is $80 for Tacoma residents and $90 for nonresidents. The class is designed for people 18 years and older.
The class will be repeated July 14.
Participants are asked to register at 253-594-7847 or www.metroparkstacoma.org. You also can find a list of trips for adults and families on the Metro Parks Web site.
