The U.S. Forest Service specialists at Mount St. Helens are joining forces with seven community organizations for a summer of volunteer trail repair work.
“Over the next two years we’ll be engaged in a large-scale effort to restore access and conduct needed backlog facilities maintenance,” said Tom Mulder, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument manager.
This summer’s efforts are being done with the help of the Mount St. Helens Institute, Washington Trails Association, Northwest Service Academy, Backcountry Horsemen, Northwest Trails Alliance and Mountain Bike Mutts.
Volunteers are needed for two upcoming backcountry trail projects:
July 18-19: Help repair hiking and mountain biking trails in the Butte Camp area on the south side of the volcano. Details and registration information are at www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volunteering/documents/ButteCamp.pdf.
July 25-Aug. 2: Help repair trails in the remote Mount Margaret backcountry north of Mount St. Helens. For details contact the Mount St. Helens Institute at 360-449-7887.
A list of volunteer opportunities, details and schedules are available at www.fs.fed.us/gpnf/volunteering/BecomeaVolcanoVolunteer.shtml.
