What: Mount Rainier National Park doesn’t allow mountain bikes on its trails, but you can ride on nearly 20 miles of unpaved park roads. The Westside Road in the southwest corner of the park and is referred to by the park Web site as an “exceptionally scenic challenge.”

The first three miles of the road is open to all vehicles but the last 91/4 miles are restricted to hikers and bikers. There are two challenging climbs. In the northwest corner of the park are the Carbon River and Mowich Lake roads, both five miles in length. There also is an unpaved road behind the old campground in Longmire that is popular with bikers. You can connect with Forest Service Road 52 and loop back toward Ashford and re-enter the park from Highway 706.

When: Daylight hours

Getting there: Find Westside Road on the left off the Nisqually Road as you enter the park. Longmire is about seven miles into the park. To reach the other roads, take Highway 165 through Carbonado. Continue on Highway 165 to reach Mowich Lake Road. Take Carbon River Road to the northwest entrance.

Cost

: There is a $15 fee per vehicle to enter the park. Entry is $5 on a bike.
