Saturday is National Public Lands Day and volunteer work events are scheduled throughout the Puget Sound region. Also on that day, all national parks will waive entrance fees.
Here is a look at some area events:
Mount Rainier National Park
This is the park’s largest volunteer event of the year. Volunteers can help with a wide variety of projects, including native plant revegetation, trail maintenance and campground restoration. Meet at the registration tent in front of the transportation exhibit at Longmire between 8 and 9 a.m.
After the event, volunteeers can gather, beginning at 3:30 p.m., at the Longmire Community Building for pizza and a 45-minute preview showing of the new Ken Burns documentary, “National Parks: America’s Best Idea.”

Gifford Pinchot National Forest
The forest is holdings its 11th annual Pick Up the Pinchot event.
The Mount St. Helens Institute, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and Washington Trails are sponsoring a cleanup on the south side of Mount St. Helens. Volunteers should meet at Marble Mountain Snopark on Forest Road 83, just outside of Cougar. Projects will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last until 4:30 p.m. Projects include clearing overgrown vegetation, cleaning up popular areas, restoring dispersed campsites, as well as constructing and maintaining facilities on the south side of the Mount St. Helens. Following the cleanup there will be a barbecue/potluck for volunteers and an awards ceremony. RSVP at npld.eventbrite.com or contact Rick Richards at 360-449-7887 for more details.
Mount Adams Ranger District staff will host an event at the site of the recently removed Hemlock Dam. Volunteers will work on restoration projects, including planting native plants, mulching recently seeded areas, and picking up litter. Volunteers will meet at the Wind River Work Center, 1262 Hemlock Road, Carson. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon and will include a short slide show about the Hemlock Dam removal project and barbecue lunch. Contact Gabrielle Snider at 509-395-3390 for information.
