Free mushroom workshops

If you want to know how to tell a delectable chanterelle from a poisonous destroying angel, sign up for one of two mushroom identification workshops to held this month at Penrose Point State Park.

The free workshops will be offered Nov. 15 and Nov. 30 from 1 to 3 p.m. each day.

Participants will learn characteristics of mushrooms helpful for identification, as well as try to identify mushrooms using a key. Some local mushrooms will be displayed, and participants are welcome to bring mushrooms for identification.

If the conditions are right for mushrooms, – this is a case when you want it to be a bit wet – participants might go for a short walk to look for specimens.

The first 15 people who call to register will be taken. Class will start at the bulletin board in the big parking lot in the park on the east edge of Key Peninsula. To register, call state park ranger Dan Christian at 253-884-2514.
