Skiing crash sidelines Crystal Mountain Olympian

LOCAL ATHLETES
• Two-time Olympian Scott Macartney of Crystal Mountain was hospitalized Jan. 19 after a high-speed skiing crash in Austria. The race was on his 30th birthday. “I’m not sure what I did on the last jump,” Macartney said. “Maybe I didn’t move forward enough or something, but I got out of balance in the air and crashed.”
• Libby Ludlow of Crystal Mountain continued her comeback from a knee injury by finishing 29th in a World Cup downhill race Jan. 19 in Italy.
• Torin Koos of Leavenworth paired with Andy Newell of Vermont to win gold Jan. 6 at the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Michigan.
TEAMS USA UPDATES
• Bode Miller won three World Cup ski races in January to break the American record for career wins long held by Yakima’s Phil Mahre. Mahre won 27 career races. Miller now has 29 wins.
• Lindsey Vonn continues to have a sensational World Cup ski season. She finished fourth in the super G on Jan. 21 in Italy. Vonn ranks second behind Austria’s Nicole Hosp in the overall World Cup standings. Vonn is first in the downhill and the combined.
• Julia Mancuso ranks fourth in the World Cup overall standings. She is third in the super G and the combined.
• The U.S. skeleton team won a World Cup medal of every color Friday in Switzerland. Katie Uhlaender of Colorado won gold, while on the men’s side Zach Lund of Utah won silver and Eric Bernotas of Pennsylvania took bronze. Lund was racing two days after breaking a rib in a training run.
• Evan Lysacek won his second consecutive U.S. Figure Skating Championship Sunday. Mirai Nagasu, 14, won the women’s title.
• Olympic gold medalist Shaun White won a super pipe gold medal at the Winter X Games Jan. 27.
• Olympic downhiller Daron Rahlves won X Games gold in the Skier X competition, a sport that will debut in the 2010 Olympics.
FACILITY UPDATES
• The first test ski jumps were taken over the holidays at Whistler Olympic Park.
• This year work is expected to be completed on the Hillcrest/Nat Bailey Stadium Park, the Whistler Athlete’s Centre, the UBC Winter Sports Centre and the Richmond Oval.
OTHER OLYMPIC NEWS
• The 2010 day-by-day competition schedule can be viewed at vancouver2010.com.
• International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge will visit Vancouver and Whistler Feb. 26-28.
COMING UP
• Cypress Mountain in Vancouver, site of snowboard and freestyle competitions in 2010, will host a World Cup freestyle event Feb. 9-10.
• Whistler Blackcomb, site of the 2010 alpine skiing events, hosts a World Cup skiing event Feb. 22-24.
