If you hear the word “mosaic” and imagine Greco-Roman gods and grapevines, it’s a good thing for you that the Society of American Mosaic Artists is coming to town. Beginning Tuesday, more than 500 mosaic artists will descend on Tacoma for SAMA’s annual conference, inspiring multiple mosaic shows at local galleries and museums and shining a spotlight on an ancient art form that’s constantly being reinvented.

If you wander into Pacific Lutheran University’s gallery this month and feel a little small, that’s understandable. In 16 big works, ice and water meet and break up into abstractions on a glacial scale, commenting not just on elemental forces such as oceans and climate change, but on the concept of landscape itself.

Anyone who is still riding a horse and turning out art-show paintings at 95 deserves a big birthday party. But Fred Oldfield, Western painter and longtime cowboy, is taking it one step further by celebrating his birthday this week at the Puyallup Fairgrounds with a painting workshop and a party raising funds for the artists he cares about – kids.
