Margaret Cho returned to television last week with “The Cho Show,” a new VH1 reality sitcom. Sent into a tailspin after the cancellation of her first small-screen adventure, ABC’s “All-American Girl,” in 1995, the 39-year-old comic was lured back to the small screen with an executive-producer credit on “Cho” and the promise of more editorial control. Cho, whose parents – and frequent comedy targets – make extended cameos on her show, picked her favorite TV moms and dads.

Carol Brady from ‘The Brady Bunch’ (1969-74)

Cho considers mother of six Carol Brady (played by Florence Henderson) a perfect representation of motherhood because she was the show’s “voice of reason and always had a rocking onion-shaped hairdo.”

Shirley Partridge from ‘The Partridge Family’ (1970-74)

Cho considers Shirley Partridge (Shirley Jones), a widow who goes on tour with her five children as her bandmates, the ultimate “glam mom.” “From a fashion standpoint, her silhouette was always chic, and she rocked those velvet blazers and bell-bottoms,” says Cho. “Can you imagine that character getting on TV now? Amazing.”

Ann Romano from ‘One Day at a Time’ (1975-84)

Bonnie Franklin’s recent divorcee raising two teen daughters is tops for Cho because of her “shockingly smooth” hairstyle. “It was like a full-on mushroom,” says Cho. “Like it rained the night before, and out popped out Ann Romano.”

The Keatons from ‘Family Ties’ (1982-89)

As “old hippies” Steven and Elyse Keaton, actors Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter are held in high regard by Cho, because they were such laid-back counterparts to their more uptight children. Says Cho, “The idea of pitting liberal parents against conservative kids was a new and different kind of struggle for TV.”

The Kims from ‘All-American Girl’ (1994-95)

Cho’s love for her own parents spills over to Jodi Long, Clyde Kusatsu and Amy Hill, who played her fictional parents and grandmother, respectively, on her short-lived sitcom. “I have no words other than they are awesome,” says Cho of her co-stars, with just a “touch” of bias. “They rule. That is all.”
