When comedienne Carrie Snow was working for Roseanne Barr, she went far beyond the job description of joke writer for the 1990s sitcom “Roseanne.” She got a gastric bypass as a “guinea pig” for Barr. Snow will tell that story and others at the “Women in Comedy” shows Saturday at Tacoma’s Temple Theater that also feature comics Carole Montgomery and Laura Hayden and Seattle singer Mycle Wastman, who appeared on last season’s “The Voice.”
The language, mood and family dynamics of “The Rainmaker” by N. Richard Nash, currently playing at Lakewood Playhouse, is reminiscent of “Grapes of Wrath” and Tennessee Williams’ “Glass Menagerie,” and in a different way of “The Music Man,” which could have been lifted almost entirely from Nash’s script.
“Legally Blonde,” the musical now playing at Tacoma Musical Playhouse, is a high-energy song-and-dance fest replete with silly jokes from sorority girls and scheming law students. Based on the film starring Reese Witherspoon, it’s the story of Elle Woods (Leah Wickstrom), a ditzy blonde who goes to Harvard Law to recapture the love of her boyfriend.
TLT's production is more than just a play; it is an historic event for Tacoma. It was adapted from the Amy Tan book by David Hsieh, founding artistic director for ReAct Theatre in Seattle, where it was first performed. This production, like the original, is directed by Hsieh and features at least two of the original actors. It is only the second time it has been performed anywhere.
When Brendan Tuohy strides into the party scene in the opera rehearsal room at Tacoma’s Urban Grace Church, he dominates the room – literally. His six-and-a-half-foot frame overshadows the men of the chorus, his gestures radiate power, and the tenor barreling from his chest like a waterfall makes the walls ring. He looks like a linebacker who can sing really well – which is kind of what he is.
The 83-year-old Asner was a young boy when FDR took office. The actor said he viewed the president as a “demi-god” while growing up during the Great Depression and World War II. “When he died, I thought the world had been swept away,” recalls Asner, who will perform in Tacoma tonight.

The touring circus from Australia that’s playing Tacoma's Pantages Theater this weekend might do the same kind of stunts as Cirque du Soleil and its spin-offs, but it does them with a whole lot more irreverent humor.

Like other disturbing literary properties such as “Lord of the Flies” and “The Crucible,” "The Children's Hour" is about the harm caused by a young sociopath. Because of subject matter that should no longer be controversial, it is seldom performed by community theaters. Kudos to Lakewood Playhouse for bringing it here, and to the cast and crew for tackling such an intense drama.
In the midst of the usual holiday fare, two Tacoma productions stand out for drawing the audience into the action. The Christmas Revels are presenting medieval English yuletide for the 20th year. And Live Paint’s new production of “The Snow Queen” blends crafts, story and make-believe for children.
