Four years after its heralded opening, Chambers Bay Golf Course continues to lose money – about $850,000 in 2011 – and still requires loans to cover its operating expenses and make debt payments.
Besides designing golf courses, Robert Trent Jones Jr. is a poet – constructing prose about nearly every world-class layout he’s drafted, including verses about Chambers Bay Golf Links.
One week from today, Chambers Creek Properties will take a 10-day break from business as usual to host golf’s most prestigious amateur event, the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship. But within a few weeks of reopening to the public, the lure of Chambers Creek is going to become only greater when two miles of formerly inaccessible shoreline becomes available to outdoor enthusiasts.
I didn’t want to finish this dining report. I wanted to keep visiting the hidden treasure that Chambers Bay Grill is just one more time. Also, I don’t like fighting people for tables. Or at least I don’t want to for the next week or so. Like the rest of the grounds around Chambers Bay, the Chambers Bay Grill will be closed for the 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 20-29. After that, we can duke it out for that sweet table in the left corner of the patio.
The watershed moment for Northwest golf came in 2006 when a car full of United States Golf Association officials pulled up to a gravel-pit-turning-golf-course in University Place.
The popular Chambers Creek trails and off-leash area will be closed to the nonpaying public Aug. 20-29 for the U.S. Amateur golf championship. The tournament is scheduled at the county-owned Chambers Bay golf course in University Place Aug. 23-29, with setup and practice a few days before play begins.
Pierce County officials and sheriff’s deputies spent at least $30,000 over the last two years to attend golf championships and other events, including the prestigious U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, Calif., last month.
So far, so good. That’s what U.S. Amateur Champion Byeong-Hun An had to say about Chambers Bay Golf Course, the links-style track where he will defend his title in two months.
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The United States Golf Association’s man in charge of picking venues and setting them up for the world’s toughest championships had one message to relay Wednesday in regards to Chambers Bay Golf Course.
It doesn’t matter if Chambers Bay Golf Course is losing money. It doesn’t matter whether there’s a permanent clubhouse. The U.S. Open is coming to Chambers Bay in 2015. And it might not be the last time.
