Washington State University HEADLINES
PULLMAN – If this is still a rivalry, it sure doesn’t feel like one.
PULLMAN — The RVs pulled into town Thursday, the customary time of arrival before a Washington State home football game.
PULLMAN – Letters of interest had been rolling into popular defensive back Damante Horton’s mailbox for weeks, and the Oakland (Calif.) High School prospect had already picked up a few scholarship offers when he started telling his mom how much he liked that Pacific-10 Conference school in eastern Washington.
PULLMAN — You don’t have to watch Southern Utah’s football team to believe what Washington State coach Mike Leach has been saying for a couple of days now.
PULLMAN — Senior cornerback Damante Horton isn’t much for talking about himself, or a whole lot else, really. So his anointment Monday as Pacific-12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week will have to speak for him.
LOS ANGELES — The lobby emptied shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday at the Renaissance Hotel, and a handful of men wearing Washington State gear shuffled toward the elevator with joyful exhaustion.
Daquawn Brown might find out here, in the city where he grew up, just how much growing up he has done as a college football player almost two games into his career.
PULLMAN — How rare is a Washington State victory over Southern California?
PULLMAN — If one play from Saturday’s loss to Auburn was evidence of Washington State’s offensive improvement, it probably wouldn’t be any of Connor Halliday’s 35 completions, or any of WSU’s three touchdowns.
AUBURN, Ala. — Washington State under coach Mike Leach will never engage in a smash-mouth, grind-it-out game with anybody, let alone a team like Auburn that prides itself on how it rushes the football.
AUBURN, Ala. — Visited yet again by disappointment and chances blown, Washington State’s football players were angry as they left this muggy southern town, that attitude reflected by the few who stopped by a stuffy room beneath Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium to talk about it.
AUBURN, Ala. — Come back in an hour and a half, Michael Garber says, because that’s when his tiger-striped party bus will actually be properly assembled, lit up and ready for friends to drink inside (and around) and passersby to gawk at.
PULLMAN – If the success of college football programs hinged on the recruitment of parents, Washington State would have long ago shucked its reputation as one of the Pacific-12 Conference’s little guys.
The college football season begins Thursday, and while I’m usually eager to watch the first encounter between toe and leather, I’m not sure I’m ready this year.
PULLMAN — To avoid all unnecessary consternation, it should be noted: This is not an official depth chart.
