If you hear a steam whistle this weekend near the Tacoma waterfront don’t go looking on the train tracks. Instead, turn to the water.
Tacoma’s Foss Waterway Seaport is playing host to the Northwest Steam Society this weekend where steam-powered boats will ply the Foss Waterway. Visitors can ask questions of the boat owners and kids can make their own working steam boat models.
A few select guests will get to go for short cruises on the boats, the museum said. The Society has 300 members whose steaming interests range from cars to agricultural machinery. Plus trains and boats, of course.
The Seaport has partnered with PuttPutt Boats to provide steamboat kits. Visitors can purchase, build and run the boats in a pond located in the Seaport's parking lot. Other steamboat activities will be offered.
Weekend activities are included with the cost of museum admission.
