Get ready to kick off the summer festival season with music and entertainment, food vendors, historic boat displays and lots of children’s activities at the annual Maritime Gig Festival in downtown Gig Harbor this weekend. The grand parade will march down Harborview Drive starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, and there will be a classic yacht festival both days and a classic car show. Learn about the early days of Lakewood when it was a resort community from the new exhibit, “Playground of the Lakes District,” opening this weekend. The city has seen the rise and sometimes fall of racetracks, ice arenas, golf courses, equestrian stables, dance pavilions, summer mansions and cabins. There will be an open house and reception from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Lakewood History Museum, 6211 Mount Tacoma Drive SW, Lakewood. Refreshments will be served at the free reception. It’s two days for dog lovers at the American Kennel Club Summer Dog Show taking place at the Washington State Fair Events Center, 110 Ninth Ave. SW, Puyallup. Sponsored by the Puyallup Valley Dog Fanciers and co-hosted by the Tacoma Kennel Club, it will feature hundreds of dogs and breeds plus exhibitors and everything to do with dogs. It also will feature a free Pee-Wee Event for children ages 5-9 years old to show their dog in the ring. It is 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with free admission. Square foot gardening is a simple and easy, kids learn to plant seeds efficiently in a grid, reduce weeds and stagger vegetable harvest.
