Hot rods, classics and custom cars will glint, gleam and start their engines beginning Friday (July 29) at the 29th annual Goodguys Pacific Northwest Nationals car show in Puyallup.
The show, the 12th of 20 car events Goodguys hosts nationally every year, will feature 2,500 preregistered cars and trucks from 15 states and Canadian provinces at the Washington State Fair Events Center.
Attendees can look forward to the Pinstriper’s Brush Bash, held all weekend at the ShowPlex building, vendors selling car parts and accessories, and family-friendly events such as make-and-take model car sessions Saturday and Sunday. Special guest Dave Kindig and the crew of Velocity network’s “Bitchin’ Rides” will be around all weekend to talk about car building and customization. The “Goodguys Northwest Nitro Shootout,” a nitro-burning nostalgia funny cars event Friday evening, is new this year.
This year’s featured club is the King’s Men Car Club founded in 1959 and host of an annual Poker Run, now in its 23rd year. In the Poker Run, participants drive their hot rods to several auto body shops from Puyallup to Orting, competing to win the highest “hand” with punch cards.
Club President Ken Bradford, who joined the club in the ’70s, said the club’s 40 members might attend 42 car shows in a season.
“And we all drive to where we’re going,” Bradford said. “None of them are in trailers.”
King’s Men Car Club emphasizes giving back to the community and has donated thousands of dollars to local food banks, animal hospitals, women’s groups and scholarship funds.
Bradford said he has attended the Goodguys show in Puyallup since it started, and it’s one of the best car shows he knows of — not only because it’s one of the biggest car shows in the Pacific Northwest, he said, but because it never fails to draw new cars and their owners to the area.
“This hobby is getting bigger,” Bradford said. “You can see lots of new cars, it’s not the same old ones year after year.”
