Listen Live at Lunch, First Lutheran’s annual free lunchtime concert series, kicks off for the summer this Monday, followed by concerts every other Wednesday through August. The series, begun in 2009 to showcase the historic church’s acoustics and beauty, features local professional and student musicians playing a wide variety of genres.
The concert series will feature both professional and student performers from the Tacoma area, in the sanctuary and performing music ranging from classical quintets to Scottish fiddle music.
“Listen Live at Lunch” began in 2009 when First Lutheran Church member Jim Gibson planned the music series in order to show off the church’s superb acoustics and historic beauty. The church serves as the concert site for Second City Orchestra, its Young Chamber Players, and other visiting artists.
From the press release: “During the summer, there are few classical musical offerings in Tacoma,” said Dr. Duane Hulbert, piano professor at University of Puget Sound and frequent LLL performer. “This concert series fills that need. It’s also a great way for children to experience classical music. It’s free so you can just drop in, eat lunch there, and hear great music.”
Hulbert, along with his son Evan on double bass, will kick off the series next Monday with Schubert’s famous “Trout” Quintet, also featuring violinist Grace Choi, violist Justin Almazan and cellist Arianna Nelson playing the cheerful song melody and rippling accompaniment.
