The Super Bowl of film arrives Sunday, and you can watch it with like-minded fans — even if you might be rooting for different contenders.
Tacoma’s Grand Cinema is once again hosting an Oscars party during the broadcast that includes a red carpet, big screen and costume contest with prizes.
The live viewing party of the 87th annual Academy Awards will take place at Theatre on the Square. Attendees can expect camera-toting paparazzi outside and theater seating inside, said Darcy Nelson, The Grand’s director of marketing and communications.
While Neil Patrick Harris hosts the event at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, in Tacoma two emcees will fill commercial breaks with film trivia contests and raffle prize giveaways.
A film costume contest, judged by the audience, offers $200- and $50-gift cards to the Melting Pot restaurant for the winner and runner-up. The person who scores the most correct guesses of Oscar winners on a provided ballot will win free movies at The Grand for a year. The “Golden Ticket” award is good for only one person, Nelson said.
The event, now in its 12th year, is so popular that its VIP tickets sold out in early February. General admission tickets are still available, but they often sell out on the day of the show, Nelson said.
Sandwiches and soups from Europa Bistro and Infinite Soups will be available for purchase.
Nelson said The Grand had record-breaking attendance in 2014. It has screened 35 of the 60 films that were nominated in the main categories of the 2015 Academy Awards. Still showing at the Grand are “Birdman,” “Whiplash,” “Still Alice,” “The Imitation Game,” “Mr. Turner” and “Selma.”
