It won’t be too hot for a celebration in Puyallup on Sept. 25.
Grammy-winning rhythm and blues band Kool & The Gang will bring their blend of funk, soul and jazz to the Washington State Fair. En Vogue is also on the bill.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Along with “Too Hot” and “Celebration,” Kool & The Gang is also known for horn-heavy hits like “Jungle Boogie,” “Get Down on It,” “Ladies Night,” “Summer Madness,” “Open Sesame” and “Cherish.”
The eternally youthful, high-energy hits of the band seem incongruous with the hard facts of time: Kool & the Gang recently marked its 50-year anniversary. First formed in 1964 as the Jazziacs, they became Kool & the Flames and eventually Kool & the Gang when they recorded their first record in 1969.
Kool & The Gang last played the area in 2012 when they were touring with Van Halen.
In a 2012 interview with The News Tribune Robert “Kool” Bell said he’s had that nickname since the 1960s — long before LL Cool J and rap came along. “Kool” is not just for the stage, he said. His friends and family stopped calling him Robert a long time ago.
Tickets are $60 (Golden Circle), $45 and $35, and include fair gate admission. Tickets will be available on the fair website, http://www.thefair.com/fun/details/kool-the-gang-with-special-guest-en-vogue or at 888-559-3247 7 a.m.-8 p.m. daily. Tickets can also be purchased at the Washington State Fair’s box office at 9th Ave. SW and Meridian Street on Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Online orders are subject to standard processing fees, and a $2 per ticket service fee will be charged for on-site purchases.
