Billy Joel is coming to Safeco Field for a concert on May 20, seven years after he last performed in Seattle. The announcement was made early Wednesday.
The Billy Joel in Concert Tour, which began in January 2104, will run through at least September, when he will perform at Wembley Stadium in London.
Joel, a six-time Grammy Award winner and a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has sold more than 150 million albums, making him the sixth-best-selling artist of all time and the third-best-selling solo artist.
Among his Grammys is the prestigious Grammy Legend Award. He is just the sixth person to receive the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, in 2014.
Never miss a local story.
“To host a concert event at Safeco Field takes a very special talent, and Billy Joel is one of those special talents. We look forward to an unforgettable evening from one of the world’s greatest performers,” Kevin Mather, president of the Seattle Mariners, said in a news release.
Joel has had 33 Top 40 hits in the United States, all of which he wrote. Among his top hits are “Piano Man,” “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” “Movin’ Out,” “Only the Good Die Young” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”
In interviews, Joel has said the decision to pursue a musical career was fueled by seeing The Beatles on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”
Though the 66-year-old stopped writing new songs in 1993 — with two exceptions — he continues to tour across the world.
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Feb. 5 at livenation.com.
