Here’s a look at booze news happening in the South Sound this month.
LEARN ALL ABOUT RUM
Tacoma’s best resource (and source) for rum, Jason Alexander, will host rum classes on select Wednesdays and Thursdays in June at the downtown Tacoma tiki bar he operates with life and business partner, Robyn Murphy.
Each two-hour rum class will cover a specialty topic, including how to build a Mai Tai or Navy Grog, plus an in-depth look at rums. Alexander is a tiki cocktail expert who won the 2014 Iron Tikitender competition.
Never miss a local story.
The owner of Tacoma Cabana promises each participant a cocktail to sip during class, rum samples, snacks and “entertainment and quizzes.”
Designated driver not included, but you should be sure to book one.
Email email@example.com for a class schedule and to reserve a spot in one of the classes, which are held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Classes are $60 per person. Find the tiki bar at 728 Pacific Ave., Tacoma.
A NEW BOURBON IN TOWN
Nightside Distillery, a tiny distillery tucked into a business complex in Edgewood, is expanding from vodka and gin.
The four-year-old distillery will pour its latest release, a bourbon, at a party that lasts three days (that’s how long all bourbon parties should last). Taste the distillery’s bourbon from 4-8 p.m. June 23, noon-8 p.m. June 24 and noon-6 p.m. June 25.
If you have not yet toured Nightside, it’s the smallest distillery you’ll visit in the area. It comes with a standing tasting counter and a small area that’s mostly taken up by a still. The distillery’s products also can be found at local stores and bars.

20 WINES, 1 EVENT
About 20 Northwest wines and liqueurs will be available for tasting at the fundraising event, Tacoma Wined Up. It runs from 2-6 p.m. Saturday at the Tacoma Armory and is an event hosted by the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts.
The $50 entry buys 10 small tastes of wine, plus a souvenir glass. Pay a $25 upcharge and get into the event an hour early, plus parking privileges.
Find the Armory at 711 S. 11th St., Tacoma.
