And sometimes Friday nights are built for cheap margaritas and fajitas.
Tacos Guaymas, the casual taqueria with a full bar in East Tacoma, has a deal every Friday night of two full orders of fajitas and two house margaritas for $25.
It started in January.
Never miss a local story.
That’s about $11 off the menu prices that already were a pretty good deal. Fajitas are typically $12.95 and house margaritas are $5 at the restaurant where diners order at the counter and find a seat in the comfortable dining room.
The amount of food that comes with the $25 deal also is impressive. These aren’t half portions or shared portions.
“For people who know Tacos Guaymas, we go big, or we go home,” said co-owner Gena Estrada with a laugh. That’s also why the restaurant stocks big to-go containers. I had enough leftovers for two meals.
She came up with the Fajita Fridays as a way to reward diners who “need some fajitas and relaxation” after a tough work week.
The deal: $25 for two full platters of fajitas, fajita fixings and two house margaritas. It’s served 4-10 p.m. every Friday only at the 72nd Street location.
Comes with: A choice of chicken or steak fajitas or a combination of chicken and steak. Fajita platters (one per person, no sharing needed) also come with plenty of corn tortillas and two full plates of rice and beans with guacamole and sour cream (again, no sharing!). Flour tortillas also were offered as an option.
There’s also baskets of chips and a serve-yourself salsa bar. The habanero sauce is devilishly spicy, the pickled red onions pack a delicious wallop of spice and there also are radishes, avocado salsa and a few other salsas.
The fajitas: We went with both chicken and steak, and they arrived on separate sizzling platters. Thick strips of juicy chicken, rubbed with a light seasoning, or steak with a smoky seasoning, were each served with a big tangle of grilled mushrooms, bell peppers and onions.
On the side: Beans were garlicky, rice was fluffy and tortillas arrived steamy hot in a covered container. Sour cream and guacamole were generous. Yes, this is a great deal.
Margaritas: They sipped down easy, and the best part is that the regular price is $5, so having a second one is still cheap after you finish the one that’s included in the deal. House margaritas are made with silver tequila, the margarita mixer is blended in house and the flavor carries a good intersection of sour and sweet. For inexpensive cocktails, these were a notch above the typical casual Mexican restaurant.
Only this location: There is also a Tacos Guaymas on 38th Street, but that restaurant is not participating in the deal. Only the Tacos Guaymas restaurant on 72nd is.
Thursdays: Tacos Guaymas on 72nd has another bargain night. Every Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. are $2 taco days, with house margaritas bargain priced at $2 and draft beer at $2, plus other specials.
More deals: Look this summer for a deal day on Tuesdays.

Note: There is also a Tacos Guaymas location on 38th in Tacoma, but it does not offer the fajitas Friday deal.
