Adding a splash of porter beer to chocolate cake can deepen the flavor in the same way a shot of espresso will. When I see a porter cake on the menu, I’ll be the first in my party to order it. That’s why I headed to the Original House of Donuts in Lakewood when I heard the bakery took the chocolate porter cake idea and applied it to a doughnut.
The Grit City Porter Cake Donut is available at the bakery on Gravelly Lake Road through March 31.
The beer used in the doughnut is made in Tacoma — Grit City Porter from Pacific Brewing and Malting. The addition of the porter turned the doughnut mildly bitter, but with a malty backbone. The cake doughnut was topped with a cloying Irish Cream frosting that added enough sweetness to push through that bitter note, but I suspect beer haters will still treat the doughnut as a terrible food dare. Me? I liked it. But I’m also a fan of porter and dark, malty, bitter flavors. I’m also a fan of Pacific Brewing. Check out the new brewery at 610 Pacific Ave (it opened in September).
Find the doughnuts through March 31 at Original House of Donuts at 9638 Gravelly Lake Drive SW, Lakewood; 253-588-2647.
Another get-it-before-it’s-gone item in Tacoma is the Girl Scouts Thin Mint shake at retro burger joint Shake Shake Shake. It’s on sale now for a limited time at the Stadium neighborhood restaurant, 124 N. Tacoma Ave., Tacoma; 253-507-4060.
