A NEW BAR AND GRILL IS COMING TO THIS DOWNTOWN TACOMA BUILDING

Back in April 2005, Jon Tartaglia told me he and his partners at Emerging Market Development would have two new downtown Tacoma restaurants open by the end of that summer. Varsity Grill opened in late fall 2005. Plans for revamping EMD's Taboo comedy club also stretched. No surprises there. Restaurants take time.
Now comes word that EMD will open a yet-to-be-named bar and grill in the Taboo space at the corner of 9th and A streets.
"We're going to remodel the whole place," Tartaglia said in a press release. "Give it a new name, move comedy upstairs and turn the main floor into a bar and grill. It's going to be a casual space. Really, something for everyone -- a place to kick-back after work."
The press release says Tartaglia plans an October opening.
No word on whether he's planning to hold a contest to name the new place, like he did for Varsity Grill.
EMD just sold 21 Commerce and The Loft to the folks who own Maggie O'Toole's Nightclub in Lakewood.
Back in April of this year, The Monsoon Room proprietress Laura Malone told me, "When I serve food here it won't be Amy's Organic entrees. They'll be blown away."
She said then that the menu monsoon would occur in the fall. She hinted at replacing her current $25 yuppie TV dinners – a menu intended not to gouge hungry drunks but to nose-thumb the State Liquor Control Man's rules that require bars to serve food if they serve booze by the glass – with small plates and things like cheese and fruit.
