The hot and hoppy, merry and malty days are upon us: Christmas in July, the time of year when brewpubs roll out stashed-away kegs of last year's holiday beers, which, thanks to their higher alcohol content, improve with age.
Tacoma's Engine House No. 9 held its Christmas-dinner-with-all-the-trimmings last week and features its E9 Winter Warmer, Redhook Winterhook, Deschutes Jubelale and Pyramid Snowcap on tap, plus Maritime Jolly Roger on cask, while supplies last.
The Swiss Pub blew through two kegs of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale last week. Until taps go dry, The Swiss is pouring Pyramid Snowcap, Full Sail Wreck the Halls, Full Sail Wassail, Maritime Pacific Jolly Roger, Deschutes Jubelale (regular tap and nitro), Snoqualmie Falls Avalanche and Hales Wee Heavy.

The Ale House will wait until Tuesday (July 25, natch) to tap into E9's Old Dickens Barley Wine, E9's Winter Warmer, Deschutes Jubelale, Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, Pyramid Snowcap, Maritime Pacific Jolly Roger and New Belgium 2 Below. Five-ounce tasters will be $1 when taps open at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Beers remain available until they're gone.
Parkway Tavern has Maritime Pacific Jolly Roger and next week will add Full Sail's Wassail and Wreck the Halls.
This being Christmas in July, Parkway will pull out a toy: Randall the Enamel Animal (pictured at right), a three-foot-long gizmo – or, technically, an organoleptic hop transducer module, according to its creator, Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales of Deleware. Without getting technical, Wreck the Halls will flow from the keg through 1 pound of fresh leafhops packed into the belly of Randall the Enamel Animal and into pint glasses.
