I'm just back from a Portland cheese eating tour. I've returned with a cheeseworthy appreciation for Oregon artisinal cheese. One of my favorite stops was a cheese shop called Steve's in a small neighborhood in Northwest Portland. I also developed a major addiction to Juniper Grove chevre and Willamette Valley Cheese Co. smoked fontina. I'll be writing more about Oregon cheese later in the summer. Stay tuned.
Now that I'm back from my cheesy detour, I thought I'd do a quick check-in on what's opened, or opening soon. Let's take a look, shall we?
Open now: After a few delays, Sax, the dinner club and jazz/R&B club has opened on Sixth Avenue. We'll get in there in a few weeks for a first bite report. Here's a glance at the menu they sent to us before they opened. More info here on their website.
Location: 2309 Sixth Ave.; 253-572-0588
Never miss a local story.
Open now: The Ark Restaurant quietly opened in the space that formerly housed The Olde Shipwreck Tavern. The owner previously ran the Caveman Kitchen in Kent, a restaurant I really enjoyed in a former job as a restaurant critic. The Ark is a fast-casual, order-at-the-counter and take a seat sort of barbecue joint. I stopped in to try the pork ribs, a salmon dip and sausage and found smoky goodness. Watch TNT Diner for a first bite report this week.
Location: 1941 Marine View Drive, Tacoma; 253-274-1921
Coming soon: Patti Frank and Barbara Kiker ran into a few construction delays with their Sweet Things Cupcake & Couture. They had hoped to open by now, but their new estimate is three weeks Frank told me today. Read my post here about the coconut, cherry mocha, sweet potato and lavender cupcakes on the menu.
Location: 2510 N. Proctor, Tacoma (no phone or website yet)
Coming soon: In case you missed it before I went on my cheesy odyssey, I reported that Minoela will open on Fawcett later in June. The restaurant will be located right next door to The Grand. Read more details here.
Location: 604 Fawcett Ave., Tacoma (no phone or website yet)
